Review: The Canteen, Toronto

The Canteen, Oliver and Bonacinni’s newest addition to Toronto’s restaurant scene, recently opened in the TIFF Bell Lightbox Building. This is the first of OB’s new affordable dining establishments which focus on locally grown food and Italian inspired dishes. The restaurant is wide open on King Street as it is floor to ceiling windows. The patio is a great place to people watch (especially celebrities during TIFF who wander around on a regular basis as the Hyatt Press and Industry room is a stones throw down the block). The menu is short and sweet, a selection of starters, pizza’s and pastas and a great little wine list. The restaurant focuses on Ready-to-Go Dining so that people can grab prepared foods and take them home or work to enjoy later. The restaurant also has a daily dinner feature for great value.

I enjoyed the following:

Montepulciano Farnese Casale Vecchia

Pizza: calabrese, cured sausage, olives, peppers and oregano

Gnocchi: braised ontario lamb, rosemary and parmesan.

#99 restaurant reviewed in Ontario since moving to Toronto in 2010.

  1. pizza looks good but how are the prices? I also refer to this place as ‘FishBowl’..totally exposed to King Street walkers/gawkers..(ha..just realized that says streetwalkers)
