Review: Sidecar, Toronto


A few weeks ago I visited SideCar on College in the heart of Toronto’s Little Italy. The restaurant has become famous for its Sunday to Wednesday prix fixe. I was joined at the table by Francisco on one of the cities first cool and breezy Autumnal evenings. We sat down to eat at 6pm and were greeted by our friendly waiter who offered us a sampling of one of their favorite prohibition era cocktails, The Last Word. This particular cocktail features green chartreuse, gin, lime and maraschino liqueur. I really enjoyed the restaurants cute bar which greets you as soon as you walk in the door. Sidecar also has large street side windows which allow you to stare out at the tram as it shoots across the city.

We ordered (*notes my favorites):

* Badass Mojito
bacardi 151 rum, mint, raspberry, lime

Shiso Brazillian
shiso infused cachaça, lime, egg

* Roast Duck Crostini

grainy mustard, green apple, gherkin

* Grilled Artichoke Soup

gruyere and shaved black truffle

Romaine Hearts
caesar dressing, double smoked bacon, ricotta crostini and parmesan shavings

* Steak Frites
AAA 8oz petite tenderloin, hand cut fries, red wine compound butter and black garlic aioli

* Brownie

gelato and berries

Bread Pudding

caramel and  berries

Our cocktails were a delight. Food was served at the table in a timely fashion and service was on the ball but not intrusive. I would highly suggest visiting Sidecar for their prix fixe menu as it offers a diverse offering. So many prix fixe menus are an utter bore but don’t fret this one has spirit! Any and every beef lover in Toronto should make sure to order their steak frites. It is one of the best I’ve had in the city, ahh…the compound butter is heavenly. The brownie was also a nice sweet finish. Just after we had paid our bill our server invited us to visit their members only prohibition inspired speakeasy located upstairs. So our adventure continued…to the Toronto Temperance Society.
