Review: Brant House, Toronto


In the early spring I visited Brant House for dinner wtih PR pro Tim Chan. I wanted to check out their menu as I had heard some time ago that they had undergone renovations and had new inspirations coming out of their kitchen. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the place. As a general rule restaurants that turn into night clubs do not often have quality of food on their minds.

The interior really is stunning. Featuring two massive bars and booths lining the wall on the right (clearly convenient for bottle service). The chandeliers over the main dining room are “wow.” We arrived on a Friday night at 5:30pm to a restaurant that was entirely empty. By the time we left shortly after 7pm there was only one other table whisking there way through the brief menu. It was clear that Brant House had not yet wowed Toronto diners. Long line ups at midnight on a Saturday night indicate people are more interested in Grey Goose bottle service rather than heirloom tomatoes.

I do suggest Brant House as a great place to grab drinks after work. All of their domestic beer bottles and mixed drinks were under 3 dollars a pop before 8pm! I also have to admit that I was impressed by the food that arrived to the table (albeit the service was a bit slow…and seeing that we were the only ones in the restaurant, the kitchen must have been working at a snails pace).

Broiled Goat Cheese *

grilled leeks, oregano dressing

Grilled Mini Fillet Mignon *

bacon, fries, fried onions

Potato Crusted Halibut

herb beurre blanc

Marinated Tomatoes *

ceviche dressing

Warm Apple Cake

walnut, caramel, cinnamon whip

The steak was yum and fries were perfectly crispy. I really enjoyed the goat cheese which had been broiled and was served atop leeks and artichoke. The warm apple cake was a depressing shame. The menu indicated it would be “warm” which was not what arrived at the table. Warm apple cake conjures up memories of Grandma’s soft, warm and moist treats but whatever arrived at my table was dry and hard as a rock. Needless to say I assume they do not have a pastry chef (just a multitude of attractive bartenders). If you are heading to Brant House leave desserts off the agenda and pack a few Oreo’s into your clutch.
